COLUMBIA, S.C. A yearslong bid by the South Carolina established Catawba Indian Nation to build a casino along with resort in North Carolina could stall after again following a suit by North Carolina established Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, their latest advancement in a casino turf warfare between the two tribes. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians filed a modified complaint against the U.S. Department of the Interior this week on land into trust in Kings Mountain near Interstate 85 for the Catawba casino. The amended complaint that this week is part of a suit filed in federal court in D.C.

The plaintiffs, including a dozen of its members living near the Kings Mountain website and the Cherokee tribe, say the land is theirs. The suit alleges requirements were violated by the Department of the Interior by not analyzing impacts of the development, and not consulting to identify and protect cultural resources in the website. 

We welcome the growing coalition that’s fighting against the DOI decision, said Richard G. Sneed, principal chief of the tribe, in a statement Wednesday. Catawba Chief Bill Harris suggested plans for the casino are moving ahead, such as a groundbreaking scheduled later this month in the site. We’re confident that their judge will find that their Department of Interior followed all national laws and made the appropriate choice regarding our application sexygaming, Harris said at a statement Wednesday. The plaintiffs claim that a South Carolina casino programmer named Wallace Cheves is behind their acquisition. They noted that two Catawba connected businessmen pleaded guilty at the year 2007 in a plan to funnel Catawba funds to political candidates seeking to reverse South Carolinas ban on gaming. 

In a statement Wednesday, their Cherokee tribe said Cheves prevailed on their Catawba to try its luck at North Carolina. Cheves didn’t respond to a request to comment Wednesday afternoon. This choice empowers their Catawba Indian Nation to pursue economic advancement opportunities for the advantage of its members and community, DOI spokesman Conner Swanson said. Swanson said the choice to approve the site was achieved after an extensive review procedure as established .
